Oil on canvas mounted board, 5 7/8 × 9¼ in.
Thomas Cole National Historic Site, Gift of Edith Cole Silberstein, TC.2000.4
“I often look at our house and think how wonderful that so much of happiness should be comprised in that little spot,” proclaimed Thomas Cole in a letter to his wife. This painting of the Thomson and Cole family home in Catskill, NY, is by the artist Charles Herbert Moore, a landscape painter affiliated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Moore lived nearby and was a close friend to Cole’s family. During the 1860s Moore even rented out Cole’s studio. In this painting of the main house at the property called Cedar Grove, Thomas’s daughters Mary and Emily, then in their twenties, sit on the steps of the porch. The honey locust tree pictured to the left of the doorway in the painting continues to stand tall in front of the house today.
